In the metal pre-treatment shop floor, we handle acids, alkalis, solvents etc. of different strengths. Some times, these products individually may not be a hazard: but, in the shop floor, two or more individual products may interact with each other to produce a result that is not safe. When sufficient care is not exercised, we give room for injury. Here are some hints for safety. Add to these benefit of your own experience.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
(MUST BE CONSTRUCTED OUT OF MATERIALS RATED AS RESISTANT TO STRONG ALKALINE AND ACID SOLUTIONS, BESIDES SOLVENTS.)

CHEMICAL GOGGLES: Eye Protection; designed to prevent splashes. Tighten the straps to get a tight seal against the face.
FULL FACE SHIELD: Clear Plastic Shield that protects the face from splashes. This is not eye-protection. Connect to hard hat.
HARD HAT: Protect the head from liquid splashes and is used with face shield to help protect the face and neck.
GLOVES TO SHOULDER: Extends protection to upper arms and forearms.
APRON: Covering for the upper body and vital organs. Should extend to top of boots for maximum protection. (A chemical suit may also be used in place of Apron).
BOOTS: Chemical resistant; affords foot protection from liquid puddles or splashes.

EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT :

  1. Hold your eyelids open and flush eyes for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Seek immediate medical attention.

SAFETY SHOWER. For skin exposures, immediately,

  1. Remove clothing and let the water wash exposed areas for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Seek immediate medical attention.
