Phosphate Coatings as base for Painting

                    Phosphate coatings as base for subsequent painting come under two categories: iron phosphate coatings, and zinc phosphate coatings, the latter with some modifications. The most important features of iron and zinc phosphate coatings are:

Iron phosphate coatings

  •  Thin amorphous structure;
  •  Coating weight: 30 to 90 mg./sq.ft
  •  Excellent surface for paint adhesion, generally best for severe post forming;
  •  Good corrosion resistance under paint.
  •  Low heating requirements;
  •  Low equipment expenditures;
  •  Low chemical costs;
  •  Easiest to control.

Zinc phosphate coatings .

  •  Relatively heavy, definite crystal structure;
  •  Coating weight: 150 to 600 mg./sq.ft
  •  Excellent surface for paint adhesion;
  •  Maximum corrosion resistance under paint;
  •  Good solution life when compared to iron phosphate.
